'What is it we remember? Anzac Day narratives in Aotearoa New Zealand'

Scholars and Soup: Join us for a bowl of hot soup and a presentation by historian Jessica McLean.

World War One is ingrained in New Zealand's national consciousness, and after five years of centennial commemoration the narratives of the war are more familiar than ever. But when we say 'lest we forget', what is it we are remembering? This talk examines three 'main characters' of New Zealand's war narrative to ask whether popular conceptions of Kiwi soldiers, women and Māori are accurate reflections of these figures' contribution to the war effort.
